When burning, what kind of wood gives off less noticeable smoke (southern, southeast, east, northeast USA)

I don’t know about species, but an “upside down fire” tends to burn cleaner once it gets going.

Conifers can produce more smoke due to high pitch content. As for fires in general,make sure the wood is dry, bark-less wood burns cleaner, keep the fire small and feed it often with pieces that are not too thick.
