Slow muddy water

I live on a slow muddy slough. Very slow and very muddy (it even changes directions when the water raises).

I’ve tried letting the mud settle out of the water, but is there a better way? I don’t want to buy a filter or anything, but has anyone tried making one with birch bark or something?

If you have a bottle, or some type of vessel.

In a bottle, cut the top off, and poke several holes in in the bottom of the bottle.

Then pack a layer of moss in the bottom, a few inches thick, then charcoal, then moss then charcoal etc etc
that makes an ok type of filter but not likely to get all the bacteria etc
