So, I’m watching “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” again today, and it just kind of amazes me how much it fits what we’re trying to do by rewilding. Has anyone else picked up on this? Anyone notice any other mainstream-ish movies/stories that deal with the mental roadblocks tossed our way to try and keep people from rewilding?
I love this book/movie and totally got that message as well. Kinda cheesy at the end of the movie with the indian drums and chanting, but also kinda cool.
Pans Labyrinth I’d say as a movie encapsulates exactly whats going on. Willem, care to elaborate?
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest has been on my must-read list for some time… I really must get around to it.
But currently I’m working through another of my list, Joseph Heller’s Catch-22. Where mental roadblocks to escaping the system are concerned, this book offers a pretty dry look at it…
Yeah, Catch-22 rocked my world the year after I graduated college. Reading that while watching a lot of MASH reruns made me think a lot about futility and trapped-ness. At the time I thought about it in the (obvious) context of war, but now I can see it in terms of our imprisonment in civilization
I say read the book. Kesey’s depiction of Chief Bromden’s point of view has many more fascinating aspects than the moving pictures. The combine narratives inspired many of my high school musings.
Trivial tidbit, while working in an asylum KK volunteered for a minor surge of ECT as part of the research for this novel. :o
Oh, the book is undoubtedly better, but as far as movie adaptations of books go, I think this is best one I’ve ever encountered. There’s certainly more to be gained from the book, but the essential spirit of the written text is still present in the movie.

I’ll second that. Great book, and the movie comes pretty close.
