Natiive American Recollections of Cooking Rock Chuck (Ground Hog)

My childhood friend, Clyde, who happens to be a Native American and cultural historian just sent me an interesting story he wrote entitled “The Fine Art of Cooking Ya Ha (Rock Chuck or Ground Hog) And Other Recollections”. Ground Hog was and still is a traditional delicacy of his Shoshone tribal people. His story tells some interesting native american history and his own youthful recollections of hunting, gathering, cooking and feasting on rock chuck, including several recipe versions from traditional cooking methods to the modern day way.

Thanks for posting this! Wood chucks are overpopulated around here (and a lot of places) and one recently dug itself into my front yard, a bit too close to the house to be good for the foundation. I’ve snuck up on it several times already, so it’s only a matter of time until I do so while carrying a bow or big stick.

That’s awesome! Thanks for this!

These are fairly prominent around here as well so this will be useful
