moths the size of vienna sausages storm my house every evening–i have no screens and they love the light. i pop the occasional crunchy ant snack while gardening, but aside from that i lack experience with eating bugs. can anyone enlighten me? these guys flap around slowly enough for an easy catch-- i help them back outside when they get too rowdy, but if they taste good. . .
I ate a moth once while camping. Neither got sick nor died, and though there was nothing special about the flavor, that could have resulted from the dirt on it.
Some crickets sort of fly or they have wings, I look out for most brownish and tanned ones. Once some friends and I found a species as large as a ripe walnuts. They couldn’t leap far or even walk fast, 'cause they grow so big and fat their legs couldn’t support them in such a way, to defend themself against us they flipped onto their back spread their legs and mandibles open in a defensive pose, readifying themselves. They looked pretty intimidating when they did that, but I just took a knife and chopped of their head quick, mercifully. After I severed the head I picked up the body and eventually cooked in next to a fire on a hot rock. To me they tasted bland but thick with worthwhile nourishment. This reminds me, if I ever see them again I don’t think I’d cook them I think I’d just eat them raw but only the wild ones that live outside and away from our cultures trials and growths, the ones inside I’d definitely cook and I heard somewhere that removing the legs, head, and only eating the body will cause us to avoid digesting the most concentrated toxic parts. As far the head and legs I’d save them for bait and/or beads!
