"It's not my mess..."

I’m sure many of you have heard that phrase come up in conversation when talking about the fate of the world. It happened to me the other day – a friend and I were talking about pollution, and cleaning up the continent of garbage floating in the Pacific ocean, and he said: “Why do you care? You didn’t make the mess; let someone else clean it up.”

Normally, I’m so flabbergasted by apathy and “doublethink” like this that I can rarely form any kind of rebuke, however that day was a blessed day, and inspiration struck me on the spot. I opened my mouth and said: “If you were a firefighter, would you walk up to a burning building and say; ‘Fuck it. I didn’t start this fire; let someone else put it out.’?”

So I just wanted to share that small win with you all. Thanks.
