It felt scary, but amazing. Our town has a boardwalk/ nature trail that goes along Turkey Creek. I take my son for a stroll there most days during his nap time. I’ve seen all kinds of birds and anilmals there. Today I heard footsteps as I approached a bend in the trail. It sounded like a human walking toward us, but as I rounded the corner I saw a bear! My heart began to beat fast; I’ve seen too many TV shows about people getting mauled/ eaten by bears. I stood still and looked down at the ground because the people on TV say that you should try to look small and harmless when you see a bear. As soon as the bear caught sight of me, he ran in the other direction and vaulted over the railing. Within a few seconds he had melted into the woods.
Congrats I saw a wild bear for the first time last year and the bear left as soon as it saw us watching. Black bear do not usually mess with people, they typically act shy unless they have learned to steal from campers’ cars. The scary bear incidents on TV almost always involve black bear’s bigger western cousin the grizzly.
