Neatsfoot oil is a very high quality oil that has many uses . Particularly oiling leather and caring for leather stuff. It can also be used as a substitute or additive for brains in brain tanning by mixing soap with it as an emulsifier.
This fellow from Germany who posts over on Paleoplanet always is very meticulous in his research and methodology. This is an excellent tutorial about rendering the various fats to get pure neatsfoot oil. Even if you never do it it’s very interesting to understand.
Wow, that’s really cool. And here I thought neatsfoot was a plant, haha! I think I’m going to try to make this sometime, my friend and I do a lot of tanning and such, so it would be nice to not have to buy it. I just don’t know where to get that many legs…Anyone have any ideas on that?
