I have talked. I have walked. I have used every tool known to man.
I am at the end of my rope for helping others.
I will concentrate on those with eyes to see and ears to hear, and my children because its my job as thier dad…

Wow
seems like there’s more of a story there. anything you want to get off your chest?
Just feeling really frustrated and needed a place to vent with others who might understand the stupidity and ignorance of modern man…
I’ll go post something more positive somewhere else!!
I’ll just post something positive here and connected to my opening which is narrowing down my focus and especially on my kids and also about walking the talk.
This last solstice my 13 year old went out and killed, gutted, removed the heart and liver, cutting off the gall bladder perfectly, one of our meat goats. (I get a free grain they throw away from a brewery so I’m not supporting the agribuisness, just upscale dumpster diving). She did this totally on her own having asked me if she could do it when we butchered for our solstice meal. Still eating that goat too but my garage looks like some kind of satanic cult lives there with this dead goat hanging from the rafters.
It was awesome to see the things I’ve been teaching these kids is actually being put into practice and is doable by them. I don’t think I’ve ever actually taught her how to do that as much as by my doing it she’s just seen it so many times she knows what to do. This is the same girl who made my cry last gardening season when I overheard her discussing some point about gardening that I didn’t know she had even picked up.
They should be teaching this stuff in schools to really prepare the kids for the world to come…

I feel that way nearly all the time brother, there is no easy way of dealing with it either…It’s difficult to take in all the BS and frustration we have to deal with in these modern times. I can understand why you are narrowing your focus, I have been on a similar tangent…Often I think I am wasting my time on online forums such as this one as I find I have more opportunity to learn from and contribute to others and my community when I am physically out on the land with them.

Right on! What a useful education for your kids. I have been learning how to butcher goats the same way as your daughter- by observing other people do it and participating in the skinning and butchering. I really enjoy watching the Bedouin kids hacking away at a goat’s head with a knife or doing some other little task to help out in the butchering when we slaughter a goat for a feast. They become very skilled at a young age because they watch and practice it so often, and they are eager to contribute and help out like the older kids and adults, so when they show readiness to contribute they are encouraged and allowed to do so.
Whereas many adults in other lands and many in the cities wouldn’t know where to begin if they had to cut up a dead animal or hunt or grow their own food. It’s unheard of in the history of the human species to have such a situation as we have today: people running around who don’t know how to feed themselves and thus survive by living off grocery stores and factory food. It’s a way of life that is hopelessly out of balance… The only remedy that I can see is to return to the old ways and regain our connection between food and meaning and the land.

You are completely right, they should be teaching the kids practical skills such as skinning goats and hunting and growing our own food…You should be proud of how you are raising your children, I wish there were more parents who were giving their children a “real” education. Teaching them the skills they can use to be self-sufficient and contribute to their communities is the best education they can get IMO.
It’s our lives we are interested in living, not being spectators in life watching actors on some pixelated screen or slaving away at jobs we hate for “goodies” and shiny toys…We need to return to the substance of life; good healthy food, vibrant and strong small-scale communities, connection between work and meaning, fresh air and the open fire, a return to traditional and customary technologies that benefit the community rather than endanger it…

that’s an awesome story! i can only hope that i get to have a similar experience with my soon-to-be 8 year old daughter someday
(on a heartening note, she expressed a lot of interest when I showed her this video of a 7 yr old boy taking down a deer w/ an atlatl)
i’m thinking i need to get her started w/ hunting & snaring sooner rather than later
Reality gets so harsh.
Having someone close to you recognize pieces of reality can drive it home further than was planned for.
When I saw that my younger sister (20 years younger) recognized concepts on my level, two things happened–one, I was happy at the thought that we didn’t have to beat around the bush anymore in conversation. But two, I stopped having a role as ‘an authority on reality’–it was very hard to adjust to simply talking as peers.
I wish this was true–actually, I still have yet to meet her as a peer. The new generation is so smart. It is an uber-challenge for us to really do what is right by them–but what else is there to do? We have to.
Just a tiny piece of what you brought up Crash. Thanks for the reality.
