Roundhouse/crannog

Their always seems to be a lot of discussion on indigenous american shelters, but other ancient structures are something to look into as well:

This is likely something I’ll be making this summer.

Great links! I think I can actually put one of these things up after checking them out. A round house will probably be my midsummer project out on TrollSplinter land.

I like them cause they seem pretty simple, yet roomy.

I’ve been tinkering with the idea of building one with two stories, or putting it in a tree, etc.
If the winters are too cold for it here, I can add a thin internal wall and fill the space, in a warmer climate, the daub can be left off.

It would disguise smoke from prying eyes, because it filters through the roof.

They also look pretty neat… like giant mushrooms ;D

I also noticed one of my links isn’t working right :(…the bracket in the first link doesn’t want to register. Just copy /paste it into the address bar, or add the bracket in the address bar after clicking.

have you ever been in an actual one? the smoke thing seems like it could be an issue…

No I haven’t yet, but apparently the smoke disperses through the thatch. I thought about that too. One site says you can’t leave an opening, because it will draft the fire up into the roof.

I never heard of that problem with other structures, but if it really does seep through the roof well enough, then I’m set. If not, some experimentation might be in order.
