Subversive Scout

All right, I just got back from my training weekend camp for being a scout leader.

It was a good refresher course for someone who hasn’t done a serious camp in a while. Though the uniforms and the parade and the schedules and the worship annoy me, it’s worth it to me to get out in the woods.

I can still get a cook fire going in less than a minute, and I can still tie a one handed bowline, and I can still skip the compass when orienteering. I learned (relearned? I’m not sure) more about what creatures are about and how to tell.

And with the consensus of the rest of my patrol, I stayed up late on the first night and swiped the patrol flags of the patrol groups. They got “scouted.”

In any case, I’m ready to go back to my scout troop and work with the kids. In a far more relaxed fashion, of course. I really feel hopeful about helping the kids rewild in the guise of teaching them scout skills.

awesome!
